From Hollywood rumors to TikTok trends, plastic surgery myths are everywhere. These misconceptions can create unnecessary fear, shame, or unrealistic expectations—keeping people from exploring procedures that could truly improve their quality of life.
As a double board-certified plastic surgeon in Houston, Dr. Janak Parikh is here to set the record straight. Whether you’re considering a mommy makeover, facial rejuvenation, or male chest contouring, here’s what you really need to know.
Myth #1: Plastic Surgery Is Only for Women
Truth: More men than ever are choosing plastic surgery to feel more confident and look more refreshed.
At our practice, male patients often seek:
- Gynecomastia surgery (chest contouring)
- Liposuction or male tummy tuck
- The Daddy Do-Over, a tailored set of procedures for men
Cosmetic surgery is about self-confidence not gender.
Myth #2: You’ll Look Fake or “Overdone”
Truth: Skilled surgeons like Dr. Parikh focus on natural, balanced enhancements—not exaggerated results.
With advanced techniques and artistic precision, modern procedures:
- Maintain facial harmony
- Enhance, not erase, your unique features
- Use subtle volume and lift where needed
From lip lifts to facial fat grafting, Dr. Parikh’s work is designed to help you look like the best version of yourself, not someone else.
Myth #3: Plastic Surgery Is Only for the Rich and Famous
Truth: Cosmetic procedures are more accessible than ever, with financing options and customizable treatment plans.
At our Houston and Lake Jackson clinics:
- Consultations are transparent and tailored to your goals
- Pricing is discussed upfront with no hidden costs
- Many patients finance their procedures through flexible payment plans
Dr. Parikh believes everyone deserves to feel confident in their skin—regardless of background.
Myth #4: You Don’t Need a Consultation—Just Book the Surgery
Truth: The consultation is the most important part of your surgical journey.
During this private meeting, Dr. Parikh will:
- Assess your goals and anatomy
- Recommend procedures that will give you optimal results
- Explain potential risks, recovery timelines, and outcomes
A good surgeon doesn’t just operate, they educate, guide, and listen.
Myth #5: All Plastic Surgeons Are the Same
Truth: Board certification matters—a lot.
Dr. Janak Parikh is:
- Double board-certified in general and plastic surgery
- Trained at prestigious institutions like UCLA and Houston Methodist
- Known for combining safety, precision, and artistry
Don’t trust your face or body to just anyone. Always ask:
- Are you board-certified?
- How often do you perform this procedure?
- Can I see before-and-after photos?

FAQs
Can plastic surgery fix everything I don’t like about my body?
Plastic surgery is transformative, but it has limits. The best outcomes come from realistic goals, not perfectionism.
Is recovery always painful?
Discomfort is expected, but modern pain management makes recovery manageable. Most patients return to light activity within a few days.
What’s the difference between a cosmetic and plastic surgeon?
All plastic surgeons undergo a rigorous three year residency after general surgery (five years of training after medical school) or an intensive six year training program after medical school. Cosmetic surgeons do one additional year of training after completing a residency in general surgery, orthopedic surgery (5 years), urology (6 years), OB/GYN (4 years), ENT (6 years) or oral surgery (4-6 years). Additionally, the board of cosmetic surgery is NOT a board that is recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties which means that it does not have the same rigor and requirement as does the American Board of Plastic Surgery.
